While he calls himself an optimist, Hawking notes the frequency of such events is increasing, and as they do, the chances of humanity living to see the Sun die in roughly 7.6 billion years decrease. Hawking suggests we start looking to the stars before it’s too late. I think the man has a point. You know how we procrastinate. One minute we think we have all the time in the world, and the next minute the world is gone. And worse, folks like University of Sussex astrophysicist Dr. Robert Smith say that we don’t even have the full 7.6 billion years. “Life on Earth will have disappeared long before 7.6 billion years,” says Smith, “Scientists have shown that the Sun’s slow expansion will cause the temperature at the surface of the Earth to rise.
